1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Script:
Title
The title of the film "They'll find you" was chosen out of all of the possibilities because I think it creates a mystery because when you see it you think
"Who will find you", "what do they want", "what's going to happen?".
You see this a lot in films, some examples are:
The Cabin in the Woods, The thing,The Blair witch project, The ring, Let the right one in, 28 days later.
These films have vague titles, and this creates a wonder as to why they are like that, like what about the cabin in the woods? 28 days later from what? Let what right one in? What thing? And i think this creates a pull to make a person watch the film and attract an audience.
Setting/ Location
The location i used was at the front and inside my house. I used this because, although it makes it easier for me because of working independently, I also wanted to go against some conventions of real media products because they usually use cliche settings like the woods or an abandoned house. Using this setting then goes against this, and it also makes the characters life seem much more normal because the first time you see the character, you also notice cars passing by, so it's not similar to the overused "I'm all alone" character, so the opening to the horror product challenges the norm of real media products, and I like this because when the action happens, using this setting, it makes it appear to have a faster pace because of her seemingly normal life in a normal environment.
Using a cliche location makes the audience aware of something about to go wrong, so the tension only seems to slightly increase when the action finally happens, whereas I think, using a normal environment makes the tension feel a lot more unexpected and this would create a better effect.
Costumes and props
My character is dressed in a plain grey vest, a hoodie, with jeggins and boots. As i said before, I wanted my introduction to seem relatively normal to challenge the conventions of real media products. For example, some film productions dress their characters in costumes that are too eye catching and the audience would then figure out that maybe their life isn't completely normal.
However the props I used use forms and conventions of real media products, for example I applied a red and brown eyeshadow under the characters eyes to make them appear restless to add a more realistic effect. You can also see here and here that I applied makeup to add realism to the scene, so the bloody scrape on her forehead and the darkened eyes for Baal. Films almost always apply these to their products.
Camerawork and editing
The camera shots I used are very similar to other film products in ways such as using close ups when appropriate, or low angles to connote dominance in the opposite character. I used close ups when I felt the audience needed to know what the character was thinking, so when the whispers are heard and Alex turns round, when Alex wakes up in a panic and also when Baal smiles into the eyes of the audience to show his not so good intentions.
These uses are applied in a lot of other films, such as the blair witch project.
I feel that the editing techniques used are also uses the forms and conventions of real media products because a lot of films present their company name, and then slowly fade into the first scene, which I also did, this creates a good smooth transition into the start of the film and i think that it starts the introduction off to a good start.
I have noticed in a lot of films that when one character talks, the camera cuts to a shot reverse shot of another character while their voice is still heard, or even their voice starting when the camera even isn't on them, I applied this technique to my product because i believe it gives a sense of realism because instead of the audience seeing cut after cut of each character, it allows them to see the other characters reactions to the speech and it gives the scene flow.
Title font and style
I used this font because the video software I was using only had the standard fonts like Arial and Georgia. I looked through the whole list several times and picked this one because it was the most effective out of all of them. I think this goes against forms and conventions of real media products because the font isn't particularly eerie or effective. However, I do like the wipe transition that wipes the title in because it uses the same technique as introducing the logo at the start of the product. I slowed the wipe right down to make the animation much more slowly so it makes the audience wait a little longer to see the full title.
Story and how the opening sets it up
The story is of a relatively average girl who lives a normal life, obviously before the drama happens. I wanted the opening shot to show this, by giving the character a simple task to do which was taking the bin out. This goes against real media products because a lot of the time, the establishing shot may already indicate what is going to happen, and some films even start in the middle of action like a flashback. I purposely chose to make my film in daylight settings because the cliche aspect of horror films is the darkness and the emptiness. I also thought it would also be best to shoot it in daylight because the physical quality of the camera would be much better while in the dark, it would appear grainy.
Genre and how the opening sets it up
I think the opening doesn't set the genre as horror because of the factors that aren't usually used, such as lots of light, based in a crowded area and in a location that doesn't indicate any abnormal things going on. In my opinion, I prefer this because the audience may not really realise what genre it is until the action starts to happen and I think this is a smart way to startle them.
How characters are introduced
My character is introduced by her attending normal day chores by taking the rubbish out to the bin. This can be seen in a lot of horror films so that the start of the product feels calm, and this allows the tension to build up from there.
Special effects
The special effects I use are colour correction and the alteration of shadows and highlights. This was to create a more intense look on the evil character, and it also makes his eyes stand out a lot more which may create more tension in the scene. At most of the point of view shots, I added a Gaussian blur and a change in hue to create this red blurry effect which shows the experience of Alex at the point of possession. I think these special effects can be seen in a lot of horror films because this lets the audience in on how the character is feeling and creates a tense atmosphere in that scene.
Another special effect I used was the split mirror effect, where Alex sees her reflection speaking back to her. I particularly like this because, music added to emphasise it, the tension rises. This effect can be seen in a lot of horror movies.
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
I attracted my audience by publishing a post on a social networking site, Tumblr, to ask my followers what they thought of my initial plot of my product, and whether they would watch it not. I included what genre the film was and also asked for their opinion of cliche and overused themes in horror movies. After this, these people asked to watch the production afterwards, which initially attracted a small audience.
I included annotations on my product via the YouTube annotation tools to include things such as music use and the names of the cast involved. The use of the music may attract a certain audience who enjoy suspenseful or tense music.

After the product was created and published online, I posted the link to Twitter to attract my audience and make my introduction more popular.

NOTES: I shall record all scenes just including Alex, THEN record the scenes with Alex and Baal in the same shot, and then record just Baal scenes due to the change in make-up and contact lenses.
The scenes with Alex and Baal in the same shot require the camera to remain in the same space while I change the character, so I need to record them back to back.
